Zacharias and Elizabeth were the parents of John the Baptist. Their memory is honored by the Christian church on September 5. This day is celebrated by those who bear the names of Zacharias, Zacharoula and Elizabeth, Zambetis and Zambeta.
Zacharias was high priest in the temple in Jerusalem against Herod, the king of the Jews. He came from the hierarchical class Avia and was Right and Blameless (Luke e25).
He disbelieved in the announcement of the Archangel Gabriel that Elizabeth’s barren wife would have a son and remained deaf and dumb until the birth of John the Baptist when he addressed a hymn to God (Luke e 67-80).
The house of Zacharias and Elizabeth hosted the Virgin during the last months of her pregnancy.
