Frappe is the iced instant coffee that is prepared by beating either in a shaker or with a special mixer, creating foam. Hence his name, from the homonymous French word (frappe), which means beaten.
It is accompanied by many ice cubes and is drunk with a straw (please make it to be eco-friendly). It was discovered in Greece and is not made in other countries, to the disappointment of many Greeks living abroad.
The raw material of frappe is used in many places but nowhere is it served like the frappe, which was discovered in Thessaloniki.
Frapes are about 60 years old. The impressive thing is that it was discovered by chance in 1957. At the Thessaloniki International Fair, Giannis Dritsas, a representative of Nestle in Greece, presented a children’s drink based on chocolate.
The recipe was simple. Milk, chocolate powder, shake and ready to eat. During a break, an employee of the company, Dimitris Vakondios wanted to drink his usual coffee. And so, he did and after him generations of Greeks do!
One of the first coffee frappe was made by Christos Lentzos in his famous cafe in Pagrati in 1965. The detail that made the difference in Lenzo’s recipe was that after beating the drink, add another spoonful of coffee over the foam, making it so even stronger.
This particular coffee for many years was practically a monopoly, since those who tried to compete with it were drowned.
